Time Traveling into a Charlie Chaplin Film

Still from The Circus, 1928There has been some theorizing that woman seen in the background of the 1928 Charlie Chaplin movie, The Circus, is talking on a cell phone. So, naturally, filmmaker George Clarke has presumed time travel. His thoughts are, the “old woman … looks like a man in drag … on a mobile phone.”

You can watch the clip in motion on the Technolog on msnbc.com. I have to admit that the actions do look a lot like today’s cell-phone addicted folks. And finding out what she’s really doing would be interesting (since I really can’t swallow the time traveler theory).

Clarke brought this to our attention in hopes that someone will come up with a better explanation. Hmmm … better than time traveler? That WOULD be extraordinary.
